Traditional Irish Farmhouse Renovation with Contemporary Extension

Nestled at the base of Slieve Nish with sweeping views over Tralee Bay, this Kerry farmhouse, built in 1908 and rich with family history, has been thoughtfully reimagined to balance heritage with contemporary living. Architect John McKenna drew inspiration from the surrounding farm buildings for the sharply contrasting annex, while Ashen & Cloud carried this interplay inside, weaving the old into the new with a careful selection of materials, textures, and design details. Traditional elements like timber, brass, stone, and limewash paint lend warmth and authenticity, seamlessly merging with contemporary features such as a bold feature staircase and sleek finishes. The kitchen, a striking centrepiece, pairs heritage materials like Breccia Viola marble with modern fittings, echoing the home's broader theme of past meeting present. Every space was designed to exist harmoniously with the dramatic Atlantic coastline, from the timber-raftered family room to the softly muted primary suite, where terracotta and bottle green tones reflect the wild beauty outside. The result is a home that not only honours its storied past but is also perfectly attuned to modern family life.
